How does dutasteride work?
Dutasteride belongs to the same ingredient class as finasteride: 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. This class reduces the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which plays an important role in androgenetic alopecia.
The difference lies in the enzyme profile. Dutasteride inhibits two main forms of 5-alpha-reductase. That makes it medically distinct from finasteride. Benefit and risk need individual assessment.
Evidence
Dutasteride has been studied in randomized trials in male androgenetic alopecia. In studies, dutasteride showed clear effects compared with placebo; individual comparisons also describe differences compared with finasteride. [1] [2]
A systematic review also concluded that dutasteride showed advantages over finasteride in several efficacy endpoints. [3] These data matter, but they do not replace individual assessment of side effects, contraindications and personal context.
Safety
Possible side effects are similar to other DHT inhibitors. They include sexual dysfunction, breast symptoms, skin reactions and mood symptoms. [4] Because dutasteride remains in the body for a long time, benefits and risks need individual assessment.
Special caution is needed during pregnancy or possible contact with pregnant people. Family planning, liver disease, other medication and previous side effects with DHT inhibitors also belong in the physician review.
Physician assessment
Dutasteride is not a finasteride variant. It is a separate ingredient with a different enzyme profile and its own risk profile. For some people, the mechanism may be medically relevant; for others, caution or alternatives may matter more.
